Have you ever been on holiday and noticed that your hair seems to be more lustrous than it’s ever been? Or perhaps you’ve moved to a new city and suddenly your hair is much more static, prone to tangling and generally harder to manage? It’s all down to “hard water”.

The UK is home to some exceptionally hard water and it can be an absolute nightmare for your hair. Without using the right products, it can lead to a flaky, irritable scalp and flat, lifeless hair.

What is hard water?

The hardness of water is determined by the mineral quality. Water is naturally soft when it falls from the sky but gains hardness when it hits the ground. Often rainwater lands in an area with porous rock such as limestone or chalk, causing the water to penetrate the ground as it passes through, collecting and dissolving particles and minerals such as magnesium and calcium. The South East of England and London water hardness levels are predominantly high.

The tell-tale signs of hard water include soap not lathering sufficiently, your clothes feeling rough to the touch or a build-up of scale on your taps, shower doors or bathtubs.

How does hard water affect your hair?

Shirley McDonald, Consultant Trichologist at the Hair and Scalp Clinic, says: “Hard water can strip the hair of its natural lubricating oils and contribute to weathering of the hair cuticle”. This can cause your hair to have a rough texture and leave it more prone to tangling and static. It can also leave it lacklustre, hard to manage and even dull your hair colour.
